I got rear ended about a month ago so while my car is in the shop getting its bumper replaced, I’m borrowing my father-in-law’s Maxima. Fire away with any questions you might have. I’m also going to try to do a mini write up next week.
My overall impression so far is positive. It’s well equipped, powerful, comfortable, and has great handling. A “4 Door Sports Car”? No. But it is a very good Grand Tourer.

Why didn’t you opt for the rental coverage on your insurance?

When you have another vehicle free to use.

I do have it but I didn’t want to make a claim on my insurance and I was tired of dealing with the other party’s insurance. It was the lazy way out i admit.
It’s my first accident I’ve been involved in, my adjuster was less than helpful, there was a lot of delay in just getting the check, and I’m under 25. I just wanted to bypass some hassle and complication.

That’s fair enough.
I got rear ended when I was 17 and, without any questions asked, the insurance company offered me a rental. Being 17, I couldn’t drive it, but I at least got to drive my mom’s car while it was being repaired.

Are these the ones with a CVT?
How is the Noise and vibration level of the car? The last time i drove a Nissan (a 35oZ) the car sounded pretty harsh with the VQ engines.

Depends on if his father in law is being inconvenienced or not. I assumed he was for some reason.

how’s the newest Nissan CVT, how did you convince your FIL to let you borrow his new Maxima, (my FIL and I get along ok, but no way he’s letting me touch his cars :) )

Yes it has the CVT.
An d yeah it sounds like it has a VQ but I kind of like it. Otherwise the car is pretty unobtrusive.

I actually like the CVT it’s a bit harsh in sport mode, but well matched with the V6 otherwise. I’ve never felt like it was slow or unintelligent. It’s surprisingly responsive.

The CVT in the Maxima is surprisingly good. I’d take it over just about any standard automatic I’ve driven.

A month and your car still isn’t back? My dad got the Rogue back after a couple weeks max the couple times he was rear ended, and my RAV4 only took a few weeks (during the holiday season, no less) to get fixed. As for me, not having a car for a few weeks was kind of my “punishment” for wrecking what is technically their car.

How bad’s the CVT?
I still like the older one. Clean and understated.

Haha oh dude sorry I wasn’t clear. I dropped the car off to get repaired Tuesday morning. It took until last week to get the check though.

It excellent actually. With this and the civic I’m becoming a believer in the CVT.
And yeah i don’t think it’s a looker, and it’s way too long.

As long as the sunroof is closed, it’s pretty darn quiet. I’ve been able to have clear phone conversations at freeway speeds. It’s m uch better than our Outback, but on-par with our old Explorer.

What trim level does it have? My rental is a premium, so it’s filled with all the goodies - front, side, and rear cameras, leather, nav, satellite, sunroof, adaptive cruise (although it doesn’t work), etc.

I think it’s the S which means it’s a base model. To me it has quite a lot of features, but my car is pretty barebones so my frame of reference might be skewed. Could do with a speaker upgrade though.
It even has cloth seats, but they’re really good. And I prefer cloth seats anyway.

Fair. I don’t have it, because 4Runner.

I have it because it’s some insignificant amount of money, less than $5 a month. It’s only on the 3 though. When I only had my Explorer, I tired to be cheap and not opt for the towing and I needed it.

Oh I have towing, definitely have that.

My first truck had a vinyl bench seat, a 5-speed, no tach, no electric anything, no power steering, and even no stereo when my mom bought it. The only luxury item was a/c.
I’m shocked at the luxuries in this Maxima. I thought my WRX was a pretty big step up, but it has nothing on the Maxima.
I found a comparison tool so you can see the difference between the two trim levels. It really comes down to luxury items. It looks like the primary mechanics are the same in both. The Premium is probably a bit heavier, so the S ought to be a bit faster. :)

I sat in one at an auto show and was struck by how incredibly comfy the front seats were. Other than that I noticed absolutely nothing.

A believer in CVTs?! Blashpemy! Heathen!
But then again they are fine in comm uter cars, I have driven the Civic 1.5T cvt . My biggest problems are that evrn the best CVT is at best, decent while a good Automatic/ DCT is really good, excellent even- BMWs ZF 8 speed for example.

Dude yes the seats are great. The interior is also smaller than what I expected based on how flipping big the car is.

Oh yeah I agree 100%. I’d take VWs DCT over these CVTs any day.
I think what it comes down to is that a good CVT can be cheaper to manufacture and maintain than a good DCT.
